Have you looked at a ton of recipes for how to make sourdough starter and been left confused and overwhelmed ? You’re not alone. Here’s the simple basic 7 day method.
Yes, the kids named ours BOB.
You will need 7 days to get your starter going before you can bake with it. After that you can bake every day using the million bread or discard recipes found online. I’ll share some of mine going forward.
Or you can just feed your starter and throw away your Sourdough discard and skip baking that day. Once it’s going you can also stick it in the fridge for a week or so covered if you need to go away or want a break from feeding it daily. It’s one of those things that seems complicated and labour intensive but once you get it going it’s actually super
Easy and convenient. We started doing this during Covid times in Ontario and it’s been a real blessing.
Step 1: Get a large jar or container (I use these glass ones) you can use any container you can cover with a tea towel and fill With like 4 cups of Liquid.

Step 2: Throw the lid in a drawer somewhere. You’re only going to use the lid if you put it in the fridge on a break because otherwise you’ll just make it rusty and ruin it.
Step 3: Get yourself some flour (any old Flour will do) but get the big bag to start with. You’re going to use a lot. You will also need a thin tea towel, a one cup measuring cup and a wooden spoon for mixing.
NEXT :Start your 7 day making of the sourdough starter process.
DAY 1
Mix one cup of water and one cup of flour in your jar. Make sure you break up any chunks and mix it all in the bottom. Avoid getting it on the sides of the jar or edges cause this will get gross over time. Cover with a tea towel and Let it sit for 24 hours in a warm place (I just stick mine on the counter)
DAY 2
Pour half of the mixture down the sink. Add one cup of flour and one cup of water to what’s left and mix it all up again. Cover with the tea towel and leave it again for 24 hours
DAYS 3,4, and 5
Do the same thing again as DAY 2
Day 6 and 7
Do the same thing again but do it every 12 hours in stead of every 24.
On the 7th day an hour or so after you do the last feed you should see that your starter is nice and
Bubbly, has grown larger and ready to bake with.

Pick up any recipe
Using sourdough starter and make yourself something lovely. Enjoy!
It’s that simple
I’ll share some of my recipes here when I get a chance. Honestly I bake bread like every other day using a really simple process that I wouldn’t even call a recipe and I use the discard in between for
Like pancakes, crackers, tortillas, biscuits, muffins and sour dough skillet in a cast iron pan. Any leftovers become croutons or bread crumbs. I don’t really do a lot of fancy stuff, but I love making it for my family and they love eating it and it’s better for them than store bought bread. Good luck!
